WERSTOK – cerkiew p.w. Podwyższenia Krzyża Świętego
WERSTOK - Orthodox church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, wooden, founded in 1769.
The church in Werst according to documents from 1766 existed since the 17th century. The temple was originally dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God. In 1769 a new wooden Orthodox church was built in its place with a log construction on a square plan. The founder was Józef Wilczewski from Wilczewo, the rotor of the banner of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
In the same parish documents from 1798-1801 there is information that the church was already a parish church. In 1869 a thorough renovation of the church was carried out. Then the gap was added (a place for storing the liturgical vestments) and a ponomarka (sacristy), and the iconostasis was placed inside. In 1909, the porch and belfry were added.
In the inter-war years it was a branch church of the parish in Omelaniec. In 1940, it became the seat of an independent parish. After World War II, the church was renovated. New bells were installed and the area around the temple was fenced. The last thorough renovation of the church was carried out in 2013-2015 (during which the temple fence was also replaced).
On August 28, 2016, during the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the church, the temple was consecrated by the metropolitan of Warsaw and Poland, Sawa.
